BIRENDRA KUMAR

Shri Birendra Kumar has been a career banker with over 4 decades of rich and diverse experience in commercial, investment & international banking in India and abroad. He was the Deputy Managing Director & Chief Credit Officer of State Bank of India, the largest public sector Bank in India. Prior to that, he was the MD & CEO of SBI Capital Markets Limited for a period of over three years. He was the MD & CEO of International Asset Reconstruction Private Limited. Shri Birendra Kumar has wide experience in the stressed asset sector, having been Advisor, Financial Advisory Services, PwC, Mumbai from 2002 to 2007 wherein he was instrumental in initiating and leading Business Recovery Services (Distressed Debt Advisory) practice of PwC in Mumbai. He was actively involved in advising ARCs on positioning strategy, formulation of business plan and operationalization strategy and in developing policies and procedures.

Shri Birendra Kumar has served on several Expert Groups set up by the Reserve Bank of India and Government of India. He was a Special Invitee nominated by RBI on the in-house working group set up to examine issues pertaining to development of market for asset securitization and for high level meeting convened by Government of India in January 2002 on setting up the first Asset Reconstruction Company. He was the member of the PwC team for undertaking a study on behalf of Asian Development Bank and Government of India to suggest regulatory changes for creating an enabling environment for successful functioning of Asset Reconstruction Companies in India.

Shri Birendra Kumar was the member of Key Advisory Group set up by the Government of India to study and recommend measures to improve the functioning of ARCs. He was also the Member, CII, National Committee on Financial Markets, Chairman, CII Working Group on Asset Resolution & Restructuring Member FICCI’s Core Group on Insolvency. He was Member of Ministry of Corporate Affairs Working Group on operationalization of the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code.

 

 

M. NARENDRA

Shri Narendra Mairpady is an eminent banking professional having more than 40 years of wide experience and exposure. He is a commerce graduate with Bachelor of Law Degree (University III Rank in both) and is a Certified Member of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB). He started his career as officer trainee with Corporation Bank. Later, he was appointed as Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Overseas Bank in 2010 and retired as CMD in 2014. During his long sting career with Banking Sector, he has ensured to achieve all critical parameters like Team Building, Brand Enhancement, Priority Sector Initiatives, Branch Expansions, new initiatives for effective Risk Management etc in Banking arena.

Shri Narendra has at his credit, some of the prestigious awards in the field of banking industry, for his excellence in outstanding performances and exceptional contribution to Indian Banking sector. He has held membership in RBI’s Technical Advisory Committee on Money, Forex and Government Securities Markets. He also held various esteemed councils and committees with Indian Bank’s Association (IBA). He is currently also the chairman of ASSOCHAM National Council for Banking & Finance

 

 

MADHUKAR R UMARJI

An acknowledged authority on secured transaction laws, Shri Umarji began his career as a legal assistant in the Law and Judiciary Department, Maharashtra government, pursuing a master’s degree in law simultaneously. He then joined the Bank of Baroda as a law officer, later shifting to Dena Bank as chief manager, legal, where he rose to the position of general manger. He later became the executive director of Corporation Bank. On account of his extensive experience in financial sector laws, including operational banking, he was appointed executive director, Department of Non-Banking Supervision, RBI. After his retirement from RBI, he worked as the legal chief for the Indian Banks Association for 14 years.

In an article published in 1991 in the Economic Times, Shri Umarji had suggested the enactment of a special law to empower banks and financial institutions to enforce securities without the intervention of courts. He made the same suggestion to the Narasimhan Committee which was considering reforms for the financial sector. On acceptance of his suggestion, Shri Umarji was later appointed a member of the expert group under the chairmanship of T.R. Andhyarujina. The Securitisation and Asset Reconstruction and Enforcement of Security Interest Act, 2002, was drafted by a special working group set up under the chairmanship of Shri Umarji by the Ministry of Finance. As a result of this, Shri Umarji represented the country at the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, which was involved in the process of drafting a legislative guide on model secured transaction laws.

 

 

SHRI SIBY ANTONY

A Post Graduate in Economics from Madras University and a Graduate in Mathematics from Kerala University, Mr. Siby Antony has over four decades of experience in Banking and Financial Services, especially in the space of Distressed Assets.

He has an aggregate service of over 35 years as a banker. Starting his career with the Reserve Bank of India in 1969, he moved to IDBI, India’s principal Development Financial Institution in 1975. Pursuing a very successful career in IDBI, he had grown to the position of Executive Director. He was appointed as the Executive Trustee of Stressed Assets Stabilization Fund, a Rs. 9000 Crore Fund created by Government of India to take over the stressed loans of IDBI, prior to its merger with IDBI Bank. He was also associated with the Corporate Debt Restructuring mechanism since inception and he was the Chairman of the Empowered Group of CDR until 2008. He also served on the board of ARCIL, the pioneering Asset Reconstruction Company in the country, as a nominee of IDBI. Later he joined Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company Private Limited as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. Mr. Siby had been instrumental in setting up the Distressed Assets Business in Edelweiss.

During his career with IDBI, as a senior executive in the Project Finance Department he was in-Charge of sectors namely, Oil & Gas, Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Steel and Textiles, besides Road & Ports. He was also associated with the Inter Institutional Group constituted by Government of India and RBI for studying the issues connected with the flow of investment in infrastructure. He represented IDBI in the informal committee constituted by Ministry of Surface Transport (MOST), Government of India for drafting/finalisation of the Model Concession agreement for road projects.

After retirement from IDBI Bank in 2008, he joined the Edelweiss Group to establish the distressed asset business in Edelweiss and as a first step set up Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company which has a license from RBI. Today Edelweiss ARC is the largest ARC in the country having acquired NPA of nearly 85,000 cr from the banking system. The Distressed Asset Business of the Group has assets under management (AUM) of Rs 25,000 crore. Mr. Siby Antony retired as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company Limited in the year 2021.
